Shiney Naturals was started because I was losing my hair, simple as that. I was diagnosed with Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) in my early 20’s. I’ve heard most of my early menstrual days that I was hormonally imbalanced but didn’t really comprehend what that meant until very late in life. I know you’re thinking, what does this have to do with skincare, just give me a minute, I’m getting there.
My research about my ‘condition’ brought me to what was causing my hair loss, my kegger, and my bad skin. My imbalanced gave me more of the male hormone, androgen. More of my focus in my research thought was about my hair; I love my hair. In this, I learned about DHT and its effects on hair follicles, and the importance of combatting it early; meaning finding measures to counteract its reign. It was too late, I was already at the shiny bald stage, which meant I either deal with it, transplant of follicles or chemicals. Saw a few dermatologists who suggested I had traction alopecia, no sir, that I did not, but is there something I can do; no hope.
I tried making hair products that would incorporate everything my hair needed from moisture to stopping hair fall. Not as easy as one may think, in order to penetrate the hair shaft and follicles the molecules in your product have to be small enough to get where it needs to go, I AM NOT A scientist or a biologist, though occasionally I play one in my kitchen.
Anyway, with all this research it gave way to Shiney Naturals. I started paying attention to what was in my skincare and my food. I started experimenting with lotions and creams, scrubs, and even fragrances. I can’t tell you the last time I bought a product for my face. Now I haven’t figured out how to make the scent last in my lotions, but once I master that, I’ll only be using what I make. I’m starting to learn soaping too, the liquid kind.
